The Painting Process

The canvas is treated with gesso initially, sanding lightly between layers.

The subject is then sketched onto the canvas.

Some paintings will have an acrylic undercoat where applicable, to deepen the colour of the subject

The oils are applied in many thin layers to create subtle changes of colour. The effects you can gain by glazing one colour over another, or layers of the same colour, gives great depth to my work.

I use a lot of blending to harmonize the colours across the canvas

After my artwork dries, I apply a varnish to protect the painting.

A painting can take me many, many months to complete using these methods.
I’m constantly working to evolve my own representational style of painting, creating a look (and feel) that’s me, and a source of great pleasure and warmth for the viewer – that’s my goal with each painting.
